Yeah, longbows go farther, but how often do you really fight anything 150ft away? Rangers top out at level 5, and they only get more useless from there on. They are matched by Dex Fighters at range and melee, but are sub-par to Rogues. Rangers cannot excel at anything any other class is already capable of, except walking. They 'are' weak and that's why I don't care for them. It is not the case that Rangers and Paladins are weak because I think they are. Originally posted by BlackMage:It's the other way around. By the end of the demo, you have at best 3 fireballs a day and can't afford to necessarily rest-scum through areas.

Only time your hands are actually full is when weapon and shield comes out (as in the case of your spell slinging fighters, but whatever). Even a greatsword only needs two hands while you're actually using it.

you don't necessarily have an arrow nocked and/or drawn every second, and just holding a bow and arrow in one hand isn't unheard of while traveling. Why would I bother having my Wizard cast Cure Wounds when one Fireball usually solves everything? Healing is the Cleric's job, and he gets Goodberry too.Faerie Fire (prevents invisibility and grants advantage for all attackers at L1), Goodberry (heals scratches and doubles as your rations at a fraction of the weight), and Hunter's Mark (high enough spell slot means it's usable all day) to list a few. But you can't cast spells when holding a two-handed weapon like a bow and arrow, which would deprive the Wizard of far more potent actions. Jump and Alarm are already on the Wizard spell list. Except there isn't really much going for the Ranger spell list. Originally posted by BlackMage:Versatility is good, and that is a fine point. I might as well go offensive and kill monsters faster. Versatility is good, and that is a fine point. and i say this as the guy who prefers to never have a ranger in his parties. Just because you don't care for paladins or rangers, doesn't make them weak. And if you like expanded spell selection then you're better off with green mage as that list is actually bigger from the ranger spells.Īlso, you DO realize that the auto-wisdom success is only to give you an idea of the percentage chance of success with whatever your current cha bonus is for that type of response, right? if you want to maximize your chances to persuade people, you're best off with both manipulator AND a paladin with the oath of tirmar.

There is no such thing as "enough spells" for a Wizard, so having advantage to expand their spell selection is HUGE.Not saying i don't like them, because i do like the concept, but compared to the combat applicability of the other two classes, plus their lack of ability to have that faster spell growth (technically speaking it's only faster if the guy rolling one die fails a roll) actually memorized and ready to go.
